Achieve more using a technique from eating salami

How come many of us go to see tarot card readers and have our palms read and yet we never see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’?

Why does a gynaecologist leave the room when their patients get undressed?

By far the weirdest thing we do, is regarding our life skills, personal development and building our resilience. It seems we’re constantly looking for new skills and techniques to learn and yet… we haven’t mastered, not only the old ones, but some basic ones too.

Recently I was speaking at an event online and I talked about (as per the brief by my client) some basic techniques and tools the audience could do to manage change and build resilience.

Afterwards, one of the delegates emailed me with a question and we decided to meet via Zoom (where else?). During the meeting, after I’d answered their question, we had a general chat. At one point they complained that during my presentation they hadn’t really learned anything new; they’d heard it all before.

How interesting, I thought. I had to dig deeper.

I asked if they thought the techniques and ideas mentioned made sense and would benefit them by helping them manage change and build resilience.

They agreed they would.

I asked if the techniques and tools were simple and could easily be integrated in to their everyday working lives.

Again, they nodded their heads.

I asked if they used any of the tools or techniques or even anything similar. I was greeted with silence. After a few seconds, they shook their heads.

Oh dear.

I have some basic practical tools and insights I teach and then I build on them with some advanced techniques and tools.

I’ve come realise, the basic principles of almost any topic (self-mastery, resilience, success mind-set, negotiation, sales, almost anything) are the same. Rarely is there anything new.

One of the reasons why so many people don’t do them after they’ve acquired the information is that there’s usually so much information they don’t know where to start. Or they make a start, but then lose steam for whatever reason.

Have you ever tried to lose weight? Many people go gung ho at the beginning and dramatically reduce what they eat and increase exercise. Then, very quickly, go back to old habits.

As I’m sure you already know, the best way you tackle making any changes is the same way you would eat a big salami.

One slice at a time. Consistency is key.

Whatever you’d like to achieve, write down all the actions you need to do to achieve it. I suppose you could say the goal is the salami and the actions are the slices.

So, which ONE of those actions are you going to do first?

I suggest you begin by choosing the smallest action that will have the biggest impact.

I lost 7 st (100 lbs, 45 kg) of excess weight using this very same technique. I made small changes in the type and amount of food I ate; I also made small changes in my exercise regime.

Then I kept it up, just one small step at a time. I stepped up and took one step onward.

And if you still can’t decide which step to take, then… just pick one and make a start; that’s the main thing – make a start.

So, what would like to achieve? And, what’s the next smallest step you’re going to take right now?

I know what my next small step’s going to be. I’m going to stop eating salami; I can’t stand the stuff ;)
